We are a global operator of essential infrastructure
- The Seed of Life Reforestation (Semilla de Vida Reforestadoras) project focuses on restoring 37 hectares in the provinces of Moyobamba and Rioja in San Martín —a region seriously affected by deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon.
- The initiative combines technology with traditional knowledge while integrating community participation with environmental sustainability. It began in early 2025, marking a milestone in the fight against biodiversity loss.
Redeia, through its Latin American subsidiary Redinter and in partnership with the organisation Ciudad Sostenible, is restoring degraded ecosystems in Peru by producing and dispersing encapsulated native seeds. The initiative, named Seed of Life Reforestation, focuses on San Martín. Together with the regions of Ucayali, Loreto, Huánuco, and Madre de Dios, San Martín accounts for 84% of the deforestation recorded in the Peruvian Amazon between 2001 and 2023, according to the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (Fundación para la Conservación y el Desarrollo Sostenible - FCDS Perú).
This initiative, which combines traditional knowledge with modern agroforestry techniques, began in early 2025 and has already become a landmark in the fight against biodiversity loss. More than 28,000 encapsulated native seeds have been producedn and planted on 37 hectares in critical areas, including Puerto Juan Antonio, Cerro Tamburco, Cerro Aucapata, and Yantaló, in the provinces of Moyobamba and Rioja. Active participants in the project include local authorities, volunteers, and community groups, reinforcing a collective effort toward ecological restoration.
Beyond its ecological impact, the endeavour takes a sociocultural approach that fosters collaborative governance. By formally handing over supplies to local communities, the operation has secured active participation from the population, boosting environmental awareness in the region and establishing a sustainable model.
‘Ecosystems are vulnerable, and we all have a key role to play. Therefore, at Redinter, we will continue striving to protect biodiversity and promote the sustainability of the Peruvian Amazon,’ said Mauricio Rivas, Country Manager of Redinter in Peru.
In the meantime, Ciudad Saludable highlighted the project’s value in applying technology to encourage sustainable development. ‘Encapsulated seeds are a transformative solution helping us achieve a greener future for the well-being of our communities and their surroundings,’ said Albina Ruiz, founder of the organisation and former Minister of the Environment.
This makes Seed of Life Reforestation a flagship ecological restoration initiative with a community-based, high-impact approach, focused on applied reforestation, optimising every stage of the process to achieve ongoing, positive, and sustainable results.
Seed of Life Reforestation falls within Redeia’s Comprehensive Impact Strategy, through which the group makes a difference in all countries where it operates—Spain, Brazil, Chile, and Peru— launching projects addressing social and environmental issues in those areas.
