As of this month Red Eléctrica will publish consumption by activity
Electricity consumption of large companies increased by 2.2% in January

In January the electricity consumption of large and medium-sized businesses increased by 2.2 % compared to the same month last year, according to data from the Red Eléctrica Index (IRE). Broken down by sector, industrial consumption grew by 4.2%, and the services sector is down 1.5%. In the calculation of this data, we have factored in the effects of seasonal and working patterns.

According to the IRE, in the last twelve months, the electricity consumption of these companies, after having factored in the effects of seasonal and working patterns, increased by 0.5% over the same period last year. By sector, industry consumption has risen by 2.8% and the services sector fell by 3.6%.

Going forward, Red Eléctrica will also publish monthly the electricity consumption data broken down by main economic activities.

The five activities with higher electricity consumption increased their demand during January compared to the same month last year: the metallurgy industry rose 3.5%, the chemical industry 6.7%, the manufacturing industry for other non-metallic mineral products 7.3%, the food industry 3.1% and the paper industry 4.5%.

Similarly, activities that contributed most to the growth in consumption of large companies have been: metallurgy, an increase of 3.5%, the paper industry (4.5%), food industry (3.1%), the public administration (6.4%) and the manufacturing of rubber and plastic products (2.5%).

Data regarding monthly electricity consumption of each of the activities can be found in more detail in the IRE section on Red Eléctrica’s website.

The IRE is an indicator which aims to provide information regarding the evolution of the electricity consumption of all large and medium-sized companies, defined as those with a contracted capacity greater than 450 kilowatts. The power measurements are collated from more than 21,500 points of approximately 13,200 companies.

Red Eléctrica receives this data from distributors, but the data is not definitive until ten months have elapsed since its publication. During this period, the data is provisional, and therefore, may vary.
