We are a global operator of essential infrastructure
At Redeia, we recognise the essential role that healthy forest ecosystems play in enhancing the resilience and protection of our infrastructure, tackling climate change, conserving biodiversity and revitalising rural areas.
Our commitment to protecting vegetation and combating deforestation in our operations and supply chain is a defining part of our corporate identity. For decades, we have developed projects and initiatives that contribute to the conservation, restoration and enhancement of forest ecosystems.
A natural evolution: Committed to forests for more than 15 years
Since 2009, we have developed numerous initiatives related to forests. As part of our commitment to vegetation and combating deforestation, in line with our climate change and biodiversity commitments, through the Redeia Forest we have planted trees in degraded natural areas, contributing to the restoration of more than 1,000 hectares, with over 900,000 trees and shrubs planted. We also sign agreements with regional authorities to promote wildfire prevention and coordinate management with firefighting teams when fires occur.
Through El Pensadere, part of our Comprehensive Impact Strategy, we have undertaken an in-depth reflection on our relationship with forest ecosystems, which has resulted in the White Paper on Forests. This working document brings together, under a common vision, all the actions Redeia promotes in support of forests. Additionally, it sets out a long-term sustainable management strategy aimed at driving transformation.
We are broadening our perspective beyond the areas occupied by our infrastructure and our legal obligations, to focus on creating shared environmental and social value in the regions where we operate through our relationship with forests.
The book sets out Redeia's new strategy based on a diagnosis that identifies six key links between forest ecosystems and the electricity transmission grid in a context of climate change and biodiversity loss. It proposes a new relationship with forests that helps enhance their ecosystem values.
This ‘guide’ to sustainable forest management reinforces our conviction that our relationship with forests must go beyond impact mitigation and regulatory compliance to create shared value for the regions where we operate.
This new approach takes a further step towards building a relationship with forests based on responsible stewardship and management that generates a positive impact on the regions where we operate, in line with the purpose of our Comprehensive Impact Strategy. With this vision, we are building a partnership with forests that helps strengthen their climate resilience, conserve their biodiversity, enhance their ecosystem services and support sustainable development in rural areas. This work is underpinned by a Theory of Change that guides our contribution to transforming and ensuring the sustainability of Spain's forested areas.
The White Paper on Forests sets out a catalogue of actions to promote sustainable forest management in collaboration with local stakeholders. The first measure to be launched is our support for the Bosques flotantes initiative, together with Fundación Naturaleza y Hombre.
Our aim is to help increase the resilience of forests to threats such as wildfires and other impacts through:
Four areas of action
Six areas of action
1 Vegetation management and biodiversity
2 Climate change adaptation and resilience planning
3 Wildfire prevention and continuity of supply
4 Integrating infrastructure in harmony with its surroundings
5 Collaboration with forest governance and partnerships with local communities
6 Promoting innovation and nature-based solutions
Caring for forests means caring for the land
Our facilities coexist with the regions where we operate, and 26% of our infrastructure runs through forested areas. That is why we work to:
- Protect biodiversity
- Conserve forest ecosystems
- Promote sustainable land management
- Create shared value with local communities
Because forests are not simply part of our surroundings: they are a strategic asset for environmental, social and economic balance.
We work across the entire forest cycle in different areas, taking a comprehensive approach to our relationship with forests:
- Habitat restoration and recovery
- Wildfire prevention and management
- Conservation of biodiversity
- Sustainable forest management
- Collaboration with public authorities and local communities
Because forests are not simply part of our surroundings: they are a strategic asset for environmental, social and economic balance.
Real action for real impact
We put our commitment into practice through specific projects in Spain and Latin America:
- Restoration of existing forests
- Initiatives carried out in coordination with public authorities
- Vegetation management around infrastructure
- Initiatives focused on wildfire prevention.
Each initiative contributes to building a new model of sustainable forest management.
Through our White Paper on Forests, we have established a strategy based on analysis and reflection that enables us to:
- Identify challenges and opportunities
- Define areas of action
- Align our activities with the needs of the regions where we operate
The White Paper on Forests sets out a Catalogue of actions that guides our decisions and provides direction for our initiatives..
The forest strategy is integrated with:
- Our electricity transmission activities
- Our sustainability strategy
- Our presence in the regions where we operate
