Red Eléctrica de España has now been incorporated into both the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Europe indexes -Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index- according to results of the 2015 edition reported today.
The Company ranks among the eight companies selected from the Electric Utilities sector at a World level and between the two companies at a European level with the best environmental sustainability performance, with an overall score of 88 points out of 100, which places the Company one point behind the leader of the sector and represents an increase of 9 points compared to the previous year.
This evaluation is carried out based on economic, environmental and social criteria, and in accordance with a comprehensive analysis by the rating agency RobecoSAM. Red Eléctrica achieved a score of 90 points in the economic dimension; 84 points in the environmental dimension, and 93 points in the social dimension.
In the economic dimension, the Company achieved the highest score in matters such as ethics management, compliance and corporate governance. In this regard, noteworthy is the advanced stage of implementation of the Company’s compliance programme and the recent separation of the positions of Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive of the Company approved at Extraordinary General Shareholders’ Meeting.
The commitment to climate change and biodiversity has been the aspects rated with the highest score in the environmental dimension. This year Red Eléctrica approved its Action Plan on Climate Change for the period 2015-2020, which sets out the objectives in this area and establishes over 100 measures for achieving its attainment, pursuant to the Climate Change Strategy approved in 2011 and updated in May last year.
In the social dimension, the most important criteria have been attracting and retaining talent, labour practices and human rights, and stakeholder management. The following aspects have been well-valued: the implementation of the new collective bargaining agreement, the healthy workplace model and a system for measuring the social action and the inclusion of a management objective linked to the performance in corporate responsibility.
The Dow Jones is a world benchmark for measuring the contribution of businesses to sustainable development. The aim of this family of indexes is to select large companies listed worldwide that stand out in the more than 50 general and specific criteria set out in the evaluation methodology according to the sector in which they operate.
In addition to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Red Eléctrica is also included in the following sustainability indexes, among others: FTSE4Good, MSCI Global Sustainability and Euronext Vigeo. This recognition reflects the Company's commitment to corporate responsibility and sustainability as an integral part of its corporate culture and is the foundation of its Strategic Plan to create value for society and for all its stakeholders.
