- The exhibition, created by Red Eléctrica, aims to show how the Spanish electricity system works and raise awareness among citizens about the efficient use of energy

The Regional Minister for Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Labour of the Regional Government of Valencia, Rafael Climent, the CEO of Red Eléctrica de España, Juan Lasala, and the General Manager of the City of Arts and Sciences, Enrique Vidal, have today inaugurated the exhibition ‘A highway behind the wall socket. Electricity from the power station to your home’. The exhibition will be on show until 2018 at the Museum of Sciences Principe Felipe, located in the City of Arts and Sciences in the city of Valencia.
‘A highway behind the wall socket. Electricity from the power station to your home’ is a Red Electrica’s travelling exhibition, designed with the aim of explaining, in a highly didactic way and via an interactive journey, how the Spanish electricity system works. Moreover, it seeks to raise awareness among citizens on the efficient and responsible use of energy.
The exhibition is comprised of three areas and includes specific content on the operation of the electricity system of the Autonomous Community of Valencia. The first area is devoted to the properties of electricity as a physical phenomenon. The second puts in perspective the electricity supply process and explains the challenge of achieving the balance between generation and consumption, the role played by the transmission grid and the importance of electricity interconnections between electricity systems.
Lastly, in the third area of the exhibition, the visitor, as a citizen and consumer, becomes the protagonist of the electricity process with the ability to be a responsible player and choose what, how and when to consume, and proposes some ideas and recommendations for a rational and efficient use of energy.
Virtual visit to the CECOEL
In addition, those who come to the exhibition will be able to visit the Electricity Control Centre (CECOEL) thanks to virtual reality technology and may also enjoy the Controla game; a simulator that turns the visitor into an operator of this pioneering control centre which is responsible for managing the Spanish electricity system.
Furthermore, the Electricity Workshop of the Museu de les Ciències, which has a projection room for audio-visuals and different interactive spaces, is also integrated into the exhibition.
The exhibition also has a space for the digital educational game entreREDes, created by Red Eléctrica and which allows the academic curriculum content of students of secondary school (ESO) to be reviewed in a fun and entertaining way and, at the same time, bring the knowledge of the electricity system closer to students in order to promote the development of a sustainable energy model.
More than 370,000 visitors
‘A highway behind the wall socket. Electricity from the power station to your home’ has already visited eight other Spanish museums. Since its launch in 2010, it has been on show in the following science museums: Parque de las Ciencias in Granada, Casa de las Ciencias in Logroño, Museo de la Ciencia in Valladolid, Museo Elder de la Ciencia y Tecnología in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Casa de la Ciencia in Seville, Museo Abierto in Mérida, Museu de la Ciència i de la Tècnica of Catalonia and Casal Solleric-Fundació Palma Espai d’Art in Palma de Mallorca. This exhibition has been visited by more than 370,000 people throughout the last seven years.
The Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission has highlighted this exhibition as one of the five best communication initiatives of European transmission system operators and a prime example of dissemination that is transferrable to all Member States of the European Union, both to improve citizens' knowledge on how the electricity system works and their understanding of the need to develop electricity transmission infrastructure.
