Red Eléctrica Forest – The Majorca Forest

Recovery of degraded natural areas and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions through the planting of trees. Support for local training and employment.

Results
  • Recovery of 36 hectares in the Sa Duaia-Es Reco public ‘common’ land, included in the SIC of Muntanyes d'Artà, affected by a forest fire in June 2013. A total of 12,125 trees, such as pine (Pinus halepensis), oak (Quercus ilex) and wild olive (Olea europea var. sylvestris), were planted.
  • 450 working days were created.
  • More than 160,000 euros have been invested in hiring the reforestation work, performed by local businesses to promote the momentum of socioeconomic development and green jobs on the island.
  • In 2015, several initiatives related to the public use of the land were carried out. In this respect, a hiking trail called ‘Walk through the Red Eléctrica Forest’ will be created for travellers and hikers, with information boards posted along the route which will run through the reforested area. In addition, other activities of an informative nature will be programmed, such as organising visits for educational centres located in towns within the region, in order to disseminate knowledge regarding the importance of conservation of forest areas.
