The Committee delegation, chaired by the German European Member of Parliament Herbert Reul, showed a great interest in this technological development of Red Eléctrica which will contribute to a greater integration of renewable energy into the electricity system in order to achieve the European 20-20-20 objectives (20% reduction in greenhouse gases emissions, 20% share of renewable energy and 20% improvement in energy efficiency).
The Chairman of the Committee highlighted the work of Red Eléctrica in developing technological tools that assist in the guarantee and security of the electricity supply.
In this meeting, which forms part of the programme of visits organised through the Spanish Presidency of the EU to analyse the energy and industry priorities of the European Union, the attending European MP's wanted to know the actual state of the international interconnections and the need to increase and improve them to develop a more efficient European electricity system.
In addition, they were interested in the technical characteristics of the new interconnection with France and they have all agreed in considering this project as a technological challenge, at the same time as being a priority for Europe.
The Committee delegation on Industry, Research and Energy was represented, in addition to its chairman, by the European MP's: Paul Rübig (Austria), António Fernando Correia (Portugal), Norbert Glante (Germany), Catherine Trautmann (France), Vladko Todorov Panayotov (Bulgaria), Reinhard Bütikofer (Germany) and the Spaniards Pilar del Castillo, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, Cristina Gutiérrez-Cortines, Teresa Riera, Maria Badia i Cutchet and Francisco Sosa Wagner.
